On 12 March 2024 a fire broke out at the Heidelberg landfill. Hessequa Municipality is in the process of filing a complaint of arson with SAPS. The fire has since been extinguished and machinery is being sent from Riversdale to help bulldoze the still smouldering area. The smouldering is causing a cloud of smoke to hang over the town. Op 12 Maart 2024 het daar ‘n brand op Heidelberg stortingsterrein ontstaan. Hessequa Munisipaliteit is in proses om ‘n klag van brandstigting by die SAPD aanhangig te maak. Die brand is intussen geblus en word masjinerie vanaf Riversdal gestuur om te help om die area wat nog smeul, vinniger toe te stoot. Die smeul van die area het tot gevolg dat daar ‘n rookwolk oor die dorp hang. Hessequa Munisipaliteit vra om verskoning vir enige ongerief en bedank die publiek vir hulle geduld.
