The municipality experienced a power outage around 20h00 on the 25th of June 2017. The loss of power came on the Eskom supply side. The Eskom team was informed and technicians were sent to site to investigate. The initial cause of the outage was reported to be caused by a damaged Voltage Transformer (VT).
In the normal cause of events, when there is an electrical fault customers can be supplied from an alternative line. This option was considered but could not be exercised because , it was discovered that the breaker on the Eskom substations could not be operated. Once the circuit breaker issue was resolved, it was further discovered that the main power transformer had an oil leak. The transformer could thus not be switched back on until this fault is rectified. Eskom Oil Regeneration Truck only arrived at the Eskom Substation in Melkhoutfontein at around 16h00 on the 26th of June 2017.
It is not possible to estimate at this stage how long this repair would take. The municipality has requested that Eskom work through the night to resolve the problem, however, the municipality is not able to guarantee if this demand will be acceded to.

Die Munisipaliteit het ‘n krag onderbreking ondervind wat ongeveer 20h00 op die 25ste Junie 2017 plaasgevind het. Die verlies aan krag toevoer het op die Eskom-toevoer kant gebeur en nie op die munisipale netwerk nie. Die Eskom-span was ingelig en tegnici is gestuur om die probleem te ondersoek. Die aanvanklike oorsaak van die onderbreking was ‘n beskadigde spanning Transformator (VT).
Die moontlikheid om kliënte te voorsien van elektrisiteit vanaf ‘n ander toevoerpunt was ook oorweeg, maar was onsuksesvol. Dit kon nie uitgeoefen word nie, omdat dit ontdek is dat die Eskom substasie nie bedryf kon word nie. Nadat die stroombreker probleem opgelos was, is dit verder ontdek dat die belangrikste krag transformator ‘n olielek het. Die transformator kon dus nie aangeskakel word totdat hierdie fout reggestel is nie. Eskom se vragmotor is tans by die Eskom-substasie in Melkhoutfontein en het omstreeks 16h00 op die 26ste Junie 2017 daar gearriveer vir die herstelwerk.
Dit is nie moontlik om op hierdie stadium te bepaal hoe lank hierdie herstelwerk sal neem nie of om enige tyd te koppel aan die herstelwerk periode nie, aangesien dit ‘n baie sensitiewe proses is. Die Munisipaliteit het versoek dat Eskom deur die nag werk om die probleem op te los, maar kan nie waarborg dat die probleem opgelos sal wees nie.
