HESSEQUA TOURISM THROUGH THE EYES OF GRADE 5 STUDENTS

Tourism is widely seen as one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. In South Africa and more specifically the Western Cape, tourism is recognised as a key contributor to the local economy. But what is your understanding of tourism?

What better way to create understanding of Hessequa tourism than involving primary school children to submit their perception and views via sketches. Explorer’s Garden Route, Hessequa Municipality’s tourism department, created a competition for all grade 5 students in the Hessequa area to submit a drawing to showcase what their understanding of what tourism is. The theme of the competition Tourism for All – Hessequa’s Heritage was developed for children to learn and play at the same time. The competition involves children, teachers and parents alike to start a dialog within the Hessequa community. Through conversation, local attractions, products and services within the region are highlighted.

The seven schools in the Hessequa region that participated in the competition are: Hornstras Primary, Klipfontein Primary, Kruisrivier Primary, Voorwaarts Primary, Melkhoutfontein Primary, Albertinia High School and Heidelberg High School. Local artists within the community were selected to form part of the judging panel and 12 sketched were selected and placed on the limited Explorer’s Garden Route 2017 calendar.

The Local Economic Development and Tourism Department would like to thank the municipal councillors for their support of this initiative, the Western Cape Education Department, Mr Mias du Plessis, all participating schools and judges.
